- Red book(or Redbook audio): Published in 1980 by Sony and Philips, it defines the physical format of audio CDs (CDDA or CDA), i.e. a sampling frequency of 44.1 kHz with 16 bit stereo sound.

- Mode 1, created to store data with an error correction system (ECC for Error Correction Code) allowing the avoidance of data loss due to the deterioration of the media.
- CD-ROM Mode 2, used to store compressed graphical, video and audio data. To be able to read this type of data the player must be Mode 2 compatible.
- Blue book: defines the format of top-quality CDs (CD-XA or Enhanced CD). This CD format has the particular feature of containing a first session containing only audio tracks followed by a session containing only computer data or nothing at all.
- White book: physical format of the video CD (VCD or Video CD)
- Green book: defines the CD-I format (Philips Interactive CD)
